The Four Basic Diversities

Of Tongues

When I first became a Christian and then subsequently

received the gift of speaking in tongues, I was taught

that I could only pray “in the Spirit” when a strong

unction of the Holy Spirit overpowered me and drove

me to nearly shout in tongues. I later learned that this

is not so.

The truth is, not much is taught on the diversities of

tongues because within the Church, not much

understanding exists regarding the workings of the

Spirit.

The operations of the Spirit cannot be understood with

the natural mind. For instance, it is foolishness to the

natural mind to think that speaking in a language that

neither you nor anyone else understands will not only

edify you and enlighten you to the things of God, but

will launch you into fulfilling your divine call.

The Different Supernatural Flows of Tongues

So let’s explore further this little-understood eighth

operation of God. The word “diversities” simply means

differences. Therefore, the terms “divers tongues” and

“diversities of tongues” tell us there are different

supernatural flows or manifestations of tongues.

The reason the church world is so confused over the

subject of tongues is that believers generally try to

impose the same set of rules on all the different

operations or manifestations of tongues. To do so

causes mass confusion among believers and misuses

the gifts of the Spirit so that instead of being drawn to

Jesus, the world doesn’t even want what we have to

offer.

Although many diversification’s of tongues occur as the

Spirit wills, four basic manifestations are outlined in

the Word:

1.

Tongues for personal edification (1 Cor. 14:4)

This is the supernatural language the Holy Spirit prays

through us that we can use to pray hour after hour as

we desire. It accompanies the baptism in the Holy

Spirit.

2.

Tongues for interpretation (1 Cor. 14:5)

This manifestation of tongues is normally presented in

a public assembly, accompanied by interpretation by

the same or another person.

3.

Tongues of deep intercessional groaning s (Rom. 8:26)

This diversification of tongues empowers the believers

to stand in the gap for their own lives, their families,

their church, their city, their nation, etc. God may also

call on them to intercede for someone or for some

situation that is totally unknown to them.

4.

Tongues as a sign to the unbeliever (1 Cor. 14:22)

This is the phenomenon that took place on the Day of

Pentecost (Acts 2:4-11). It occurs when the Holy Spirit

transcends the intellect and all language barriers by

empowering a believer to preach, teach, or testify

about Christ in some language of men of which the

believer himself has no knowledge.

The rules that govern the operation of tongues for

personal edification are as different as night and day

from the rules that govern tongues for interpretation.

For that matter, the rules governing the deep

intercessional groaning s of the Spirit are completely

different from either one of the other two

manifestations of tongues. And the diversity of tongues

that presents itself as a sign to the unbeliever has very

different rules from the other three!

Of these four different manifestations of tongues, two

are designed to be used in the individual prayer life of a

believer: tongues for personal edification and tongues

that extend into the deep intercessional groaning s of

the Holy Spirit. The other two, tongues for

interpretation and tongues as a sign to the unbeliever,

are normally for use in public assembly. As a believer

begins to understand and yield to these four different

manifestations of the diversities of tongues, it will

completely transform his life.

(LB) WHEN I FIRST LEARNED ABOUT THE 4 BASIC DIVERSITIES OF TONGUES, I WAS BLOWN AWAY, HOW LITTLE THE CHURCH KNOWS ABOUT ANYTHING TO DO WITH TONGUES.

I WAS LISTENING TO A CHRISTIAN GOD-CAST TODAY AND THE HOST MENTIONED SOMETHING ABOUT TONGUES AND HAD NO CLUE OF WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT, AND THAT’S NOT A CRITICISM OF HIM, HE JUST DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT THE OPERATION OF THE DIVERSITIES OF TONGUES BECAUSE NO ONE HAS TAUGHT HIM ABOUT IT, JUST AS NO ONE HAD TAUGHT ME ABOUT IT FOR 20 YEARS OF GOING TO CHURCH.

I MIGHT AS WELL TELL YOU UP FRONT THAT PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME EVERYDAY WILL NOT BE EASY, BECAUSE THE dEVIL WILL FIGHT YOU MORE ON THIS ONE THING THAN ANY OTHER THING IN YOUR SPIRITUAL LIFE.

WHY?

BECAUSE YOU WILL BECOME UNCONTROLLABLE TO HIM
